Specialist Short-Game Coaching

Short Game Coaching

Inside 100 yards, more shots are lost to the wrong decision than to the wrong technique. Coaching starts with the read—how the ball will come out of this lie—then builds the shots that read asks for, and makes sure they hold when the score matters.

What We Work On

Every shot from 100 yards in

The same diagnostic standard as every session: find what truly limits the shot, protect what already works and build the smallest change that lasts.

Chipping and pitching

Strike, low point, face and loft delivery measured rather than guessed, so your stock shots carry and release the way your read predicts.

Bunker play

From clean sand to plugged and downslope lies, reading how the ball will come out before choosing what to play.

Putting and green reading

Slope, speed and start line, with putting analysis showing how your stroke really behaves. Detailed stroke work continues in Advanced Putting Coaching.

Decisions under pressure

Cues built into your routine so the decision you made holds when consequence rises, drawing on Chris’s golf psychology work.

The V.E.R.T. Read

Four questions before every short shot

Most golfers pick the shot they want, then hope the lie lets them play it. Coaching teaches the read the other way round, until it takes seconds.

  1. Read the lie

How will the ball come out? Launch, speed and spin.

  2. Rate the shot

What does this shot need? Height and carry, landing, release, and what a miss will cost.

  3. Compare

Can the way the ball comes out deliver what the shot needs? If it can, play it.

  4. If not, choose

What are the other options, and which one leaves you the best next shot?

It works at every level, because it is a decision, not a swing change. You choose a shot the lie will let you play.

How a Session Works

Read real lies, then build the shots they ask for

Read real lies together

We play the shots you meet on the course, not perfect ones off a mat.

Find what limits the shot

If the read calls for a shot you cannot yet produce, 3D biomechanics and launch-monitor data show why.

Build one change that lasts

The smallest useful change, checked by data, with practice that transfers to the course.

First short-game session? 90 minutes is recommended, giving time to read a range of lies, find what limits the shot and begin the change. Every session length, from 30 minutes to a full day, is available.

Why Work With Chris Brook?

Three decades of short-game coaching

Portrait of golf performance coach and author Chris Brook

Chris Brook is a specialist short-game and putting coach and the creator of the V.E.R.T. method. He teaches golfers to read the shot in front of them—the lie, the slope, the green—and to choose the right strategy, not just the right technique.

That work sits within the Chris Brook Clarity Method, which connects biomechanics, performance psychology and performance identity, so a short-game problem is understood fully before anything is changed.

Players coached include tour professionals, England international Jenson Bull and Lee James (former Walker Cup player, Amateur Champion, Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner and European Tour professional), as well as county players and keen golfers.

Common Questions

Before you book short-game coaching

Do I need to read the book first?

No. Sessions teach the read directly on real lies. The book is a useful companion afterwards, especially its reference of 156 lies, but it is not required.

Will you change my technique?

Only where the read asks for a shot you cannot yet produce. The aim is the smallest useful change, checked by evidence, not a new short-game swing for its own sake.

Does short-game coaching include putting?

Yes. Green reading, pace and start line are part of short-game work. Golfers who need detailed stroke, strike and roll analysis can continue with Advanced Putting Coaching.

How long should a short-game session be?

A 90-minute session is recommended for a first visit, because it allows time to read a range of lies, find what limits the shot and begin the change. Every session length, from 30 minutes to a full day, is shown on the booking page.

Can I have short-game coaching online?

Yes. Live online sessions work well for the read, decision-making and practice design, using video of your own lies and shots. Studio and on-course work suit strike and technique changes best.

Where do sessions take place?

Near Bournemouth in Dorset, online in real time, or at tournaments and your own home course or base by arrangement.
